It is with tremendous sadness that we must convey the news that Steve Gilliard, editor and publisher of The News Blog, passed away June 2, 2007. He was 42. To those who have come to trust The News Blog and its insightful, brash and unapologetic editorial tone, we have Steve to thank from the bottom of our hearts. Steve helped lead many discussions that mattered to all of us, and he tackled subjects and interest categories where others feared to tread. Please keep Steve's friends and family in your thoughts and prayers. Steve meant so much to us. We will miss him terribly. photo by lindsay beyerstein

Blogging scholarship Do you maintain a political weblog and attend college? Would you like $2,000 to help pay for books, tuition, or other living costs? If so, read on. We're giving away $2,000 this year to a college student who blogs about politics. Our scholarship is awarded annually. When we first introduced our general Blogging Scholarship in 2006, we didn’t really know what to expect. The applicants had such varied interests and style. There were 10 finalists, all outstanding at what they did. In the end, the winner of the popular vote was a political blogger. We then realized it’s very hard for others to compete with political bloggers when it comes to rallying votes. Instead of banning political bloggers from entering this year’s Blogging Scholarship without any compensation, we decided to create a separate scholarship just for political bloggers. With the 2008 presidential election run up already well underway bloggers figure to play a big roll in the next election. When submitting your application please label your affiliation as one of the following. We are accepting scholarship applications from all political bloggers and our directors will decide on a blog from each category to become a finalist. If we do not receive an application from a blogger claiming one of the political categories, we will leave out that particular category during the final round to decide the winner. In true democratic fashion, voting will be open to the public to decide the winner between the finalists. All submissions must be received before Sunday, February 4rd 2007 (6 pm PST). Our panel of judges will decide on finalists for each political category and public voting will be enabled the morning of Monday, February 5th. Voting will be closed at noon on Monday, February 12th 2007. During this time, check our blog for announcements, updates, finalists, and voting information. In a written concession speech consisting of 350 words or less, the losers can say whatever they wish…completely unedited and uncensored. We will post the speeches on this page as we receive them. The deadline for turning in concession speeches is Wednesday, February 14th 2007. If you have a friend that blogs on political issues feel free to mention this page to them, or if you want to really surprise them—nominate them, stating why you think they deserve this scholarship. There is a 300 word limit for this essay. Like great blog posts, short and interesting is preferred over verbose.
